Investors can now choose from currency-hedged ETFs on the MSCI indices for Australia, Canada, EMU, Japan, Switzerland, Switzerland 20/35, United Kingdom and the United States. The ETFs are all physically replicated.
Exchange rate fluctuations primarily have a major impact on the investment returns of CHF, JPY and GBP investors. Japan provides a good example of how important currency hedging is. Over the past five years, MSCI Japan (JPY) has posted an annualized return of 8.53%. Without hedging, investors would have earned only 3.35%, while with currency hedging the gain would have been 6.49%.
